Letter No. 52 - Aesthetically Speaking with Silvia Dusci
Plus fall fashion, books and vintage treasures.
Dear Reader,
One of my favourite parts about writing this newsletter is the Aesthetically Speaking interviews. What an absolute privilege it is to be able to pick the brains of these fabulous, smart women, spread all across the world. This week’s interview featuring Silvia Dusci, the creative mastermind behind the beloved jewellery brand Le Sundial, is no exception. For letter no. 52, she talks all things style, quality over quantity, and the importance of embracing your true self. I hope you’ll enjoy this interview as much as I did. Wishing you all a marvellous weekend!
Love,
Carolina

THE INTERVIEW
Silvia Dusci is the founder and creative director of Le Sundial, a contemporary jewelry brand known for its fusion of timeless elegance and modern design. Drawing inspiration from her love of travel, historical designs, and the natural world, Silvia creates unique, made-to-order pieces that reflect a deep appreciation for craftsmanship and beauty. Silvia believes that jewelry should transcend trends, and her work emphasizes the importance of quality over quantity, valuing objects that are crafted with care and built to last. This week, Silvia took the Aesthetically Speaking questionnaire and talks style, favourite books and the importance of embracing your true self.
If I were to describe myself in three words they would be cheerful, genuine, and very reflective and empathetic. I find immense joy in connecting with inspiring individuals and engaging in deep, meaningful conversations.
My style signifier is a monochrome look paired with ballerinas or small heels, complemented by black and silver jewelry.
I always start my day with a hot herbal infusion while doing my morning skincare routine and applying a hydrating mask, all while listening to some good jazz music.
My beauty essentials include Biologique Recherche creams that vary depending on my skin’s needs and the seasons, and P50 W400 toner, which is essential for starting my morning routine. For makeup, I opt for a natural look with Farah Omidi or Saie tint, Chanel bronzer, and La Bouche Rouge Chestnut lipstick.
A book I often recommend to others is The Year of Magical Thinking by Joan Didion. It’s a deeply emotional and meticulously detailed work that I read in one sitting. I also highly recommend Ritrovarsi a Parigi by Gaito Gazdanov, a profound novel that explores a deep and transformative encounter between two people. I’m particularly drawn to dramatic, passionate, and intense stories that delve into profound and mysterious themes.
A recent project I’m particularly proud of is the upcoming collection from Le Sundial, set to launch in the next few months. Starting the brand has been an incredible journey, filled with both challenges and milestones. What excites me most is developing new products and shaping the creative direction of the brand. I find daily inspiration from the remarkable women I meet, the cities I visit, and the diverse influences around me.
One thing I’ve recently learned is the importance of embracing your true self and having confidence in who you are.
The latest additions to my wardrobe are a Fortuny pleated praline bag I discovered during a fantastic weekend in Venice, and an exquisite By Malene Birger leather trench coat that I’m eagerly looking forward to wearing this fall.
An object I would never part with is my Nautilus Onyx Collar from Le Sundial. As my first creation, it holds special significance and immense personal value.
My favorite room in my home is the living room. I associate it with relaxing evenings spent with my boyfriend, watching a good movie, surrounded by candles and the warm, cozy scent of Byredo’s Bibliothèque.
The music I listen to most is rooted in jazz and its associated vibe. I play music throughout the day and while working, and I enjoy curating playlists and discovering new ones. I particularly love The Row’s monthly playlist, which continually introduces me to amazing songs and artists, creating a unique atmosphere.
My motto is “Believe wholeheartedly in your ambitions and desires. With determination and consistency, everything will fall into place. Confidence is key”
The best advice I ever received is ‘Always be true to who you are.’
My go-to source for inspiration is books. I find old books and magazines particularly unique, offering content, images, and details that aren't always available online.
One item that is on my wish list is the Totême Broad Midi coat and Off-Duty Boots for winter!
My favorite piece of clothing is a good leather jacket. I love leather pieces and wish I could wear them all year round! They add a powerful touch to any outfit, whether in suede or smooth leather, making a monochrome look — especially total black — more interesting and chic.
Something I think we’ll see more of in 2024/2025 is a shift towards tailored fits, moving away from excessively oversized styles. I believe that fit is becoming crucial in collections again, which I absolutely love. Of course, this will still involve experimenting with structures, fabrics, and various shapes, but with a focus on refined silhouettes.
Three pieces I’m investing in for the new season are classic Chanel ballerinas, Khaite Marfa boots, and a chic clutch that I’m still searching for.
My top five dead-or-alive dream dinner guests would be Joan Didion, Jane Birkin, Elsa Peretti, Diana Vreeland, and Carolyn Bessette Kennedy.
The item that got away is the Almond pump from The Row — I absolutely love the shape, and the taupe color was very chic!
A recent find is a unique Art Deco ring from the 1920s, crafted in white gold and diamonds. It’s a very special birthday gift. I also discovered a leather jacket with distinctive shoulder details and a boxy fit at a vintage store in Florence.
My best styling trick is ‘less is more.’ Embrace repetition and consistency in your taste and style — being true to yourself will never be boring! Also, paying attention to details makes all the difference. The choice of fabrics and materials, as well as the fit of the garments, is crucial. As someone petite, I find that a well-considered fit can make a significant impact.
A brand that makes up a significant part of my closet is Totême. I admire their attention to detail and monochrome tailoring, which create timeless yet strikingly unique collections. Totême’s ability to stay true to their vision is something I deeply appreciate. For accessories, The Row also holds a special place in my wardrobe.
Someone whose closet I’d love to raid is Linn Hägglund. I admire her impeccable taste and keen eye, and I’m certain her wardrobe is full of timeless and exquisite pieces.
Something I care deeply about is spending quality time with those I love and valuing the time I share with others. I believe it's essential to focus on the quality rather than the quantity of time spent with people, just as in all aspects of life.
My guilty pleasure is indulging in pizza while watching a TV series. For me, enjoying pizza is always a magical moment!
My go-to scent is Byredo Blanche, a timeless classic that I’ve always been loyal to. Recently, I’ve also developed a fondness for Regime Des Fleurs Leather Petal and Là-Bas, which are both sophisticated and add an impeccable touch to your day.
The perfect Sunday for me is a leisurely walk in the park with my boyfriend, immersed in a good book, followed by a cozy lunch break. In Milan, my sanctuary is Villa Necchi—a serene escape where I can unwind with a book and a coffee, away from the city’s hustle. I have a deep appreciation for strolling, and whenever possible, I indulge in long walks around the city, savoring its charm.
Three essentials you'll always find in my handbag are Officine Buly lip balm, a pen with notes, and a great lipstick.
If I had to choose a different profession it would be Interior Designer. I’d love to explore this field, as I enjoy researching emerging designers and believe that interior design is deeply connected with my current interests and passions.
Someone I love following on Instagram is Pirrie Wright. She’s a dear friend and one of the most talented and kind women I’ve ever met.
A film that deeply resonates with my aesthetics is Notting Hill. I adore Julia Roberts' style and the film's authentic, charming vibe. I find myself reflecting the simplicity and graciousness depicted in the movie, and I believe it's a film that never grows old.
Someone I’d love to see featured in Aesthetically Speaking is Erica Elizabeth Wright. I admire her work with Sourcewhere, including the concept and overall image. She has an incredible eye for detail.
Don’t forget to follow Silvia and Le Sundial on Instagram for more inspiration!
ON MY MIND

NEW BOOK ALERT. I stumbled upon this new book by Rachel Cusk the other day and got intrigued by the synopsis: “Midway through his life, an artist begins to paint upside down. Eventually, he paints his wife upside down. He also makes her ugly. The paintings are a great success.” I did not leave the bookstore empty handed…
